Reading with your child is a great thing to do for both of you. If your child shows some resistance, here are some suggestions that might help.
If the child doesn't want to read...
Try these strategies: 1. Read a page or a line and then have the child read.
2. Select a funny book or one with a surprise at the end.
3. Let the child select a book.
If the child says the book is too easy (a baby book)...
Try this strategy: 1. Ask the child to read it with "expression" so he can read
it to a younger child.
If the child says the book is too hard...
Try these strategies: 1. Choose a different book.
2. Go down a level to an easier book.
3. Read a short passage and have the child reread the
passage.
4. Read the beginning and have the child fill in some of
the words, then gradually let her take over.
If the child comes to an unknown word and stops...
Try these strategies: Pause to give the child time to think, then say:
1. Read to the end and then come back to this word.
2. What sound does the word begin with?
3. What sound comes next?
4. What would make sense here?
5. Do you see a pattern or small word? (Frame it with your
fingers.) For example: kick(ing) or become (be) (come).
If your child gets restless or squirmy...
Try these strategies: 1. Choose another book.
2. Stand up and stretch with your child.
3. Finish reading the book to your child.
4. Ask the child if he needs to go to the bathroom.
REMEMBER THIS NEEDS TO BE A FUN TIME FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR CHILD, SO
ENJOY!!!!
