Suggestions for reading with your child:
Before reading- Take a picture walk through the book, introduce unknown vocabulary and try to make a prediction
During reading- Guide your child as they read. When they come to a word they don't know remind them to spot the vowel. At Jefferson we teach students in Kindergarten about Vowel Hill (See Video), and 1st and 2nd grade students are learning about Vowel Town . (See Video) If they can't tell you what the vowel says, then tell them. If that doesn't work encourage them to use different reading strategies such as chunking or using picture & context clues. You could ask them “Does that word make sense?” or “Look at how the word begins.”
After reading- Ask your child to retell the story to you. Listen for elements such as characters, setting, events/details from the story, & how they story ended.
